Philippines senator Trillanes on BBC HARD talk

Antonio Trillanes, Duterte, Du30

HARDtalk's Stephen Sackur interviewed Philippines Senator, Antonio "Sonny" Trillanes chief Duterte critic. When it comes to populist politics delivered with robust action no-one does it quite like Rodrigo Duterte, elected President of the Philippines a year ago. Since he came to power, around 7,000 criminals have been killed in his war on drugs crime and Philippine streets are safer. Human rights groups, Yellows, political opponents and bitter people are not happy, but a majority of Filipinos seem to admire his iron fist policy.

About seven u.s. Navy sailors were missing on Saturday after a United States destroyer the "Fitzgerald" collided with a Philippine merchant vessel ACX Crystal off the coast of Japan, according to the Navy said. There were also crew members who were injured, including the officer in command of the guided missile destroyer. The officer, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was evacuated from the ship by helicopter to a nearby United States naval base and was in stable condition, the United States Seventh Fleet said in a statement. According to reports two other sailors had been evacuated by helicopter and were being treated for lacerations and bruises

Japanese news television showed massive damage to the Fitzgerald, which the Navy said had taken on water but was still capable of moving. The Philippine container ship ACX Crystal, appeared to have sustained minimal damage. All 20 Filipino crew members aboard the ship were safe

The Fitzgerald’s hull was partially caved in on its starboard, or right-hand, side, while the Crystal showed deep gashes in its bow. The pattern of damage suggested that the Crystal had collided nose-first with the Fitzgerald’s side.

Most of the 200-plus sailors aboard the ship would have been asleep in their berths, some of which reportedly flooded, when the collision occurred at 2.20am local time.

The USS Fitzgerald, part of an eight-ship squadron based in Yokosuka, had in February completed $21m worth of upgrades and repairs.

The popular Philippine tourist destination in the Philippines, Resorts World Manila was on lockdown after reports of gunfire and explosions at the building near Manila's international airport. Hundreds of guests and employees rushed out of one of the hotels after a masked gunman on the second floor began firing at guests, hotel employees fleeing the scene said.

It was also been reported that there were people injured after the gunfire. Philippine police chief Gen. Ronald Dela Rosa said at a press briefing one gunman is believed to be behind the attack at Resorts World Manila, and is still at large.

Dela Rosa told reporters at the scene that the gunman stole gambling chips, shot an LED monitor and set ablaze gambling tables by pouring gasoline on them, but the assailant did not fire at people he met.

At least 25 people were injured, the Philippine Red Cross told The Manila Times. Fernando Atienza, team leader of the emergency response unit of the PRC, told the Manila Times some of the victims suffered serious injuries because they jumped from the second floor of the hotel.

Gunfire and a fire were reported at the resort complex in Pasay City sometime after midnight Friday local time. Metropolitan Manila Development Authority reported that there is a "fire alert" at the Resorts World Manila about 12:30 a.m. local time.

The SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S. terrorism monitor, said an Islamic State-linked Filipino operative who provides daily updates on the ongoing clashes in Marawi in the southern part of the country claimed that "lone wolf soldiers" of the Islamic State group are responsible for the attack at Resorts World Manila.
