Julian Martir May 30 International Universities Scholarship Nga Ba? O Fake News lang?

Noong nakaraang linggo, matatandaang maraming major at minor media outlets ang nagbalita na si Julian Martir ay nakapasa sa 30 na prestihiyosong unibersidad sa ibang bansa na mayroong mga scholarship na nagkakahalaga ng P106 milyon. Sa pamagat na ito, makikita na ang dami ng reaksyon at shares sa Facebook na ito, o sa ibang salita, ay tiyak na mag-t-trending ito ng publiko.

Ngunit noong ika-19 ng Mayo, nagbago ang buong kwento matapos makita ng mga Pilipino ang online interview na isinagawa ng isang Philippine broadcast station, kung saan si Julian Martir ay medyo nagkamali nang tanungin kung bakit niya napili ang kurso na kanyang pinili. Sa Interview nya sa News5, tinanong siya ng reporter kung bakit double course sa mathematics at science ang guston niya ang sagot niya ay: "I want to be a quantum scientist po kasi makikita mo ‘yan sa mga Avengers po. Gusto kong i-build yung biomechanics prototype po para magagamit ko siya sa glasses po na pwede tayong maka-communicate sa mga animals po. Kasi yung glasses na ‘yan parang inadvance ko yung technology, parang ‘yung tinatawag natin na super computers po." Dito na nag duda ang mga tao, dahil hindi ganyan sumagot ang mga totoong henyo. 

Sa DZRH ininterview ang assistant principal ng Senior High School sa Negros Occidental High School sabi nya. "Kung totoo man ‘yan, we’ll be happy for him pero we are still verifying yung mga claims niya. May mga comments na nababasa ako bashing him and telling na i-fact check yan. So parang, hindi namin pwede i-confirm ang isang bagay na hindi naman talaga kami sure. Nagta-try kami na i-e-mail ‘yung mga nabanggit na universities sa US and sa Europe kung totoo nga na siya ay nabigyan ng scholarship. Hanggat wala kaming nahahawakang dokumento na nagpapatunay, hindi kami mag-coconfirm.

Madaming Netizens ang pumuna sa media na hindi nag v-verify ng mga news stories nila. Hindi mo na din ma-access ang mga news report nila tungkol kay Julian Martir:

Sabi naman ng isang intern sa college's admissions office sa ibang bansa na may experience sa ganitong foreign scholarship:

"Ako ay bahagi na ng wild ride ng international college admissions sa loob ng mga 2-3 taon na. Naging sobrang nakatuon ako dito noong buong taon ko ng pagitan ng dalawang taon sa kolehiyo, kaya't alam ko kung ano ang pinag-uusapan ko.

Ngayon, ano nga ba ang nangyari kay Julian Martir?

Si Julian ay ang pinakabatang anak ng isang tricycle driver at isang vendor. Mula sa Negros, nag-aplay siya sa mga kolehiyo sa panahon ng kanyang gap year. Tinanggap siya sa 30 na paaralan, na may mga scholarship na nagkakahalaga ng $1.9M (~P106 M).

Maraming tao ang nagsasabing ito ay peke. Pero naniniwala ako na nagsasabi ng totoo si Julian.

Hindi maaaring magdagdag ng mga scholarship mula sa iba't ibang paaralan, kaya hindi kayang pondohan ni Julian ang kanyang mga pagtanggap.

Kaya't... bakit nga ba mahalaga ang isyung ito? Bakit dapat mong alalahanin kung nagsasabi ng totoo si Julian o nagpapanggap siya sa kanyang mga scholarship?

Sa palagay ko, ito ay isang nakakabighaning isyu dahil ito ay nagbabalangkas ng maraming kritikal na mga isyu na kinakaharap ng bawat isa sa modernong lipunan ng Pilipinas."

Ayon naman sa 8list, sinubukan nila kumpirmahin ang status ni Julian Martir sa 30 universities sa listahan ni Julian Martir. Isa lang ang sumagot ang Alfred University na kinumpirma na natanggap nga siya pero hindi sinabi kung scholar siya. 

Nabalita kamakailan lamang na ayon sa World Population Review na ang IQ ng average na Pilipino ay mas mababa sa average, at nasa mas mababang kalahati ng Southeast Asian region, kasama ang Malaysia, Brunei, Laos, at Indonesia.

Lucky Me! Pancit Health Warnings: Ethylene Oxide

 

MANILA, Philippines — Three countries in the European Union (EU) (Ireland, Malta, and France) issued separate health warnings against Lucky Me!, according to their food regulators Lucky Me noodles contains ethylene oxide, which is a chemical commonly used to disinfect products and this chemical may cause health problems like cancer if people are exposed it for a long period of time. Ethylene oxide can also be found in pesticide. The chemical is flammable and is also used to make antifreeze and polyester according to the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information said.

Their government recalled several variants of Lucky Me! noodle soup and pancit canton, particularly those manufactured between 2021 and 2022. It includes pancit canton flavors original, hot chili, kalamansi, and chilimansi and Lucky Me! beef mami flavor.

The Irish government noted that some of the Lucky Me! products being recalled were manufactured in Thailand.

"This pesticide is not authorized for use in foods sold in the EU. Although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an acute risk to health, there may be health issues if there is continued consumption of ethylene oxide over a long period of time. Therefore, exposure to this substance needs to be minimised."

The France health regulator stated that consumers should stop buying the products, return them to the store where they bought them, and destroy them.

In a statement issued Thursday, Lucky Me manufacturer and owner Monde Nissin said that it was not adding ethylene oxide in its noodle products.

"It is a commonly used treatment in spices and seeds to control microbial growth typical in agricultural products. These materials, when processed into seasoning and sauces, may still show traces of ethylene oxide," they said in the statement.

Monde Nissin also assured that all Lucky Me! products are registered with the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA), complying with local food safety standards and "even the US FDA standards for ethylene oxide."

Infrawatch PH Wants Philippine Government to Ban Binance

Infrawatch PH which is headed by Terry L. Ridon filed a formal complaint against Binance at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and petitioned to suspend the virtual asset services provider (VASP).

The group addressed a letter to BSP Governor Benjamin E. Diokno they want not only to banned Binance which a lot of Filipinos are using they also want the BSP to reject future applications of the company to register with the BSP.

The group said that there are 3.4 million Filipino Binance users, oh well those 3.4 million Filipino would never vote for you.

RIP Isabel Granada

Singer actress Isabel Granada passes away at 41 Saturday night in Doha. She shot to fame as a child and teen star in the 1980s.

Geryk Genasky Aguas, Granada’s former husband who spoke from Qatar where Granada was confined for more than a week, confirmed the news in a report on dzMM Sunday morning, Manila time.

The actress died at Hamad General Hospital in Doha, where she was rushed after she collapsed at a fan meet-and-greet in the same city on October 25.

The condition that led to her collapse was described as a brain hemorrhage indicating aneurysm, which in turn affected her heart.

Aguas said Granada was declared brain-dead by doctors on October 27. She never woke up from her coma.

The remains of actress Isabel Granada will be brought back to the Philippines on Wednesday this week.

Granada's partner, Arnel Cowley, told GMA News that he will bring home the actress' remains from Qatar on Wednesday night.

Other close relatives of the actress who went to Qatar after she fell into a coma were scheduled to return to the country today.

Cowley said they were planning to have Granada's remains cremated.

He said the actress had told her while they were attending a friend's wake in Australia that she would like her remains to be cremated.

Cowley, however, said this would depend on the decision of his wife's mother.

He said Granada was declared dead at 6 p.m. in Qatar (11 p.m. Philippine time).

The official cause of death of the actress was brain hemorrhage due to aneurysm, he added.

MANILA - Horacio Castillo III, a law student at the University of Santo Tomas, experience "extreme pain and suffering" in a suspected fraternity hazing caused his dead body to bloat and it was peppered with bruises and burns, his father said on Monday.

The 22-year-old student told his parents that he had been accepted to the "Juris Aegis fraternity" after completing tasks like cleaning hallways and running errands for members. On Saturday, he attended the organization's welcoming rites at the UST campus, his father Horacio Castillo Jr. told ABS-CBN News.

The freshman law student never made it home.

A resident found Castillo's body dumped in a street in Balut, Tondo on the wee hours of Sunday. He was rushed to the Chinese General Hospital, but was already lifeless when he reached the hospital.

His family found him there after receiving a tip from an anonymous text message, his father said.

"Mayroon siyang mga hematoma. His body is bloated. Nakita ko, there was extensive damage in the upper arm and some burn marks, cigarette burn marks... and pinatakan ng candle wax," the elder Castillo ABS-CBN's "Umagang Kay Ganda."

"He went through extreme pain and suffering. I don't know why they did this when it is a legal fraternity in UST and they are lawyers," he added in a DZMM interview.

In tears, the grieving father urged his son's killers to surrender to authorities. "Sana naman ma-konsensya sila. He was only 22 years old, he was robbed of his future. Sana lumabas na sila. Tell everything, tell the truth," he said.

ABS-CBN News received no immediate comment about the incident from UST.

Castillo's remains has been brought to the Archangel Funeral Homes and would undergo autopsy.

Ingat tayo sa mga PM, PM sa Facebook pwede pala ma-hack ang account mo! Ilang netizen ang nabiktima ng online scammer para mang-hack ng social media account gamit ang private message na kunwaring may "sex video scandal" ang kanilang tatargetin.

Sa ulat ni Joseph Morong sa GMA News "24 Oras" nitong Lunes, ikinuwento ni Freshelle Fernandez kung papaano na-hack ang kaniyang Facebook account nang matanggap ang mensahe sa messenger mula sa isang kakilala, na una na palang na-hack ang account.

Sabi ni Freshelle nagpadala ng mensahe ang kaniyang friend sa messenger tungkol daw sa kaniyang private video at may kasamang "link."

Dahil may agam-agam, pinindot niya (click) ang "link" at dito ay pinag-log-in siya. Inilagay niya ang password sa account at doon na naagaw ang kaniyang Facebook account.

"Napakagaling na po yung technology ngayon. Kayang- kaya pong iedit gamit yung mukha ko kaya po natakot ako tsaka kinabahan. Kasi kahit po hindi ako yung nasa video, kung pangalan ko po yung gamit, iisipin po ng mga tao na ako 'yun," paliwanag ni Fernandez.

Ginamit na rin ng hacker ang kaniyang account para makapanloko ng mga taong nasa friend list niya at kunwaring nag-aalok ng mamahaling cellphone.

Ayon sa I.T. expert na si Jerry Liao, ang nangyari kay Fernandez ay isang uri ng online scam na tinatawag na "phishing scam."

"Basically 'pag nag-enter ka ng username at password, mapupunta yun dun sa cybercriminal, then of course nakarecord 'yon, they can use your log-in information into your website or  to your account, Facebook account. So puwede na nilang gawin kung anong gusto nilang gawin sa account mo," paliwanag ni Liao.

Matapos mag-viral ang kuwento ni Fernandez, nagsilabasan na rin ang iba pang nagkuwento na nakaranas ng kahalintulad na modus operandi ng panloloko sa Facebook.

Sa record ng PNP-Anti-cybercrime Group, apat lang ang kaso ng "phishing scam" sa halos 4,600 cyber crime cases mula 2013 hanggang nitong Hunyo.

Ngunit hindi raw ibig sabihin nito na madalang ang naturang uri ng panloloko. Sa halip, madalas daw nauuwi ang "phishing scam" sa mas malalang krimen.

"Ang pagrereport kasi nila dito, yung secondary offense na na-commit ng offender after committing the offense of phishing, like online scam and sextortion cases. Dapat na agad-agad sila na mag-report lalong-lalo na dito sa aming opisina," ayon kay Police Senior Inspector Artemio Cinco, PIO, PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group.

Upang hindi mabiktima ng "phishing scam," ipinayo ni Liao na laging maging mapanuri at magduda lalo na kung humihingi ng mga personal na impormasyon tulad ng mga bank account at password.

Huwag din umanong maniwala kaagad sa mga natatanggap na mensahe lalo na sa mga hindi kakilala. Driver's License With 5-year Validity Will Be Issued Tomorrow

The Land Transportation Office will release the first batch of driver’s license cards with five-year validity today at the LTO Central Office in Quezon City.

About three million Driver's license applicants who applied for new and renewed licenses since October 2016 will be receiving their five-year-valid identification cards starting tomorrow.

President Rodrigo Duterte had earlier signed Republic Act 1093 which allows the extension of the validity of the driver’s and conductor’s licenses from three years to five years.

In an interview with the Manila Bulletin Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said that the five-year license cards are made more durable from polycarbonate plastic and have improved security features.

He said that the agency awarded last April the P830-million procurement of the license cards to supply six million ID cards.

The transportation chief said that the supply would satisfy demands for driver’s license until 2018.

The LTO, however, was directed to be stricter on the issuance of the driver’s licenses to assure that licenses will only be issued to competent applicants with sufficient driving skills and knowledge of road safety and proper road courtesy.

32 Dead in a Bigtime Drug Operation in Bulacan in 24 hours

In a span of 24 hours 32 drug suspects dropped dead and 107 were arrested in Bulacan during a police’s anti-drug operations.

Grenades, illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition were recovered from “simultaneous one-time, big-time operation” by the Bulacan police from 12 midnight of August 15 to 12 midnight of August 16, the Bulacan provincial police office said in a statement on Wednesday.

The latest number of killed suspects was the result of the Bulacan Philippine National Police’s continuing effort to cleanse the province of illegal drugs.

According to Senior Superintendent Romeo Caramat Jr., police provincial director in Bulacan, said that 67 simultaneous police operations were conducted by 24 police stations in Bulacan including the Bulacan Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB) and Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) “in an effort to continue with the relentless drive against illegal drugs, loose firearms and implementation of search warrant in the Province of Bulacan.”

Data from Bulacan police said that a total of 367 pieces of heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets of suspected shabu approximately weighing 234.4292 grams; 765 grams of marijuana leaves; 2 grenades; 34 assorted firearms; 114 pieces of ammunition were recovered during 49 buy-bust operations, serving of 14 search warrants and three checkpoint operations.

The operations took place in Angat, Balagtas, Baliwag, Bocaue, Bustos, Calumpit, Guiguinto, Hagonoy, and Malolos.

PNoy Appointed Comelec Chair Accused by Wife of Having 1 Billion Pesos Unexplained Wealth

Former President Benigno Aquino III appointed chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is being accused of amassing ill-gotten wealth by his own wife. In a press conference earlier today, Patricia Bautista, the wife of Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Andres ‘Andy’ Bautista told reporters that she had signed an affidavit accusing her husband of accumulating at least PHP1 billion (USD20 million) in “unexplained wealth.”

“I understand that since Andy holds the position of Comelec chair, he is liable to be impeached should there exist valid and sufficient grounds to hold him in trial for an impeachable offense under Sec. 2, Article XI of the 1987 Philippine Constitution,” Patricia Bautista said in the affidavit.

In the report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Patricia said her husband who was also a former chairman of the agency tasked with recovering the ill-gotten wealth of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos had wealth of his own hidden in overseas bank accounts as well as real estate investments in the Philippines and abroad.

The affidavit lists the following properties as assets not included in the chairman’s statement of assets, liabilities and net worth:

• Thirty-five Luzon Development Bank (LDB) passbooks with a total balance of PHP329,220,962 (approx. USD6.5 million)
• A Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) dollar account amounting to USD12,778.30 (PHP641,000)
• An RCBC peso account with PHP257,931.60 (USD5,518)
• An HSBC account with HKD948,358.97 (PHP6.10 million)
• A condominium unit in One Bonifacio High Street at Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig City
• A condo unit in The District in San Francisco, California

Patricia, who said she had been wanting to separate from her husband since 2013, wanted to “make a distinction between the ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ money that forms part of our conjugal property.” She said she could not, however, make the distinction herself because her husband controls “most of if not all” of their finances.

In addition to the bank accounts and real estate, Patricia said her husband also has business interests in foreign companies.
Companies named in the affidavit include:

• Bauman Enterprises Ltd., a company set up in the British Virgin Islands on Sept. 29, 2010; a trustee company set up with Bank of Singapore.
• Mantova International Ltd., founded in Darussalam, Brunei, in 2011.
• Mega Achieve Inc., established in Anguilla, a British territory in 2014.

Prior to submitting an affidavit to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) last August 1, Patricia was able to meet with President Rodrigo Duterte in late July to tell him about the alleged ‘unexplained’ wealth of her husband.

She said she spoke to Duterte out of “fear” of her husband “and his network.” She said she had also filed violence against women and children complaint against her husband for alleged “emotional and economic sabotage.”

President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday answered former President Benigno Aquino III who criticized his drug war with "Sige, pumasok ka sa droga PNoy, ‘pag hindi kita pinutulan ng ulo, buang ka. Anong walang nangyari? Gago ka," he said at the 113th founding anniversary of the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Duterte said that uniformed officials during Aquino's term such as General Vicente Loot had drug links.

"Mga generals mo, ‘yang aide mo, ‘yung aide ni [former Interior Secretary Mar] Roxas puro nasa droga, konektado. Number one diyan ‘yung bata ninyo si General Loot, isa pa ‘yang u– na ‘yan," he said.

Duterte also told reporters after his speech that he had almost achieved in a year what Aquino managed to do in six years.

"Kasi sabi niya, walang nangyari sa campaign. Tingnan naman niya, in all of his six years, he was only able to seize or catch about 3,045 kilos of shabu. Ako, dito ngayon sa akin, just one year, I have already seized about 2,000–nearing 3,000 sa entire six years niya," he said.

Aquino had previously defended his administration's record against drugs, noting that the number of drug users didn't increase during his tenure.

Aquino on Tuesday questioned the Duterte administration's campaign against illegal drugs, and was quoted as saying "parang wala yatang nangyari."

Former President Benigno Simeon Aquino III said that current President Rodrigo Duterte's drug war is ineffective. Aquino told reporters on Tuesday that during his term in 2015, statistics showed that there were 1.8 million drug users in the Philippines. At the end of 2016, the number of drug users in the country remained at 1.8 million.

“Parang wala yatang nangyari (It seems like nothing happened),” Aquino said.

Noynoy Aquino to face trial for Mamasapano Trajedy

Former President Benigno Aquino III will be in court to face criminal lawsuit over a botched anti-terror raid in Maguindanao province in 2015 that caused the death of 44 police commandos according to the Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales Friday.

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales ordered Aquino charged with usurpation of authority and violation of the anti-graft and corrupt practices act, the anti-graft body said in a statement.

Also included in the charges were Aquino's former national police chief, Alan Purisima and the former director of the police Special Action Force, Getulio Napeñas.
