Former QC mayor Mel Mathay Dead at 81


MANILA, Philippines — The former mayor of Quezon City (QC) Ismael "Mel" Mathay Jr., 81, passed away due to a heart attack at the Medical City in Pasig City, family members said in television interview.

Mathay served for three terms as a city mayor from 1992-2001. He also was in Congress. His family ask for prayers and privacy.

MANILA, Philippine - 4 people that includes a mayor of Zamboanga del Sur town died in a shooting incident on Friday, December 20, 2013 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3. It killed Labangan Mayor Ukol Talumpa, Jose Angel Honrado (Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager) said.

The shooting happened around 11 am, two men in police uniform riding a motorcyle shot the mayor and his family at the arrival area. The victims were immediately brought to the nearby Villamor air base hospital.

MANILA, Philippines — Papa Dom dies, he is the lead vocals of a local reggae band called Tropical Depression, Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-aawit said.

Papa Dom or Dominic Gamboa died of kidney failure. His family asked for privacy at this time.

Philippines Bea Rose Santiago won Miss International 2013 held at Shinagawa Prince Hotel Hall  Tokyo Japan. Bea Rose Santiago dedicates victory to the Philippines.

Bea Rose Santiago:  "This is for the Philippines. I love you Philippines."

She said earlier that she hopes to win Miss International amid relief and rebuilding efforts in Tacloban due to the superstorm Haiyan.

MANILA, Philippines — a Don Mariano passenger Bus fell from a Skyway bridge in Taguig City on Monday Morning. It landed on a van that killed 18 people.

Skyway Corporation said that the bus was on the southbound lane going to Alabang in Muntinlupa City then it fell from the elevated expressway that flattened a van below.

Out of the 18 who died, 17 were passengers of the bus and one was a passenger of the van.

Police says a criminal group targeting jewelry shops known as "martilyo gang" was behind the robbery at SM North EDSA Sunday night at around 7 p.m. It triggered a commotion at the department store packed with holiday shoppers, according to Police Officer 1 Ralph Celorio of Quezon Police District Station 2.

A crow bar and a hammer believed used by the gang were recovered at the mall.

“I had my police officers to go straight to SM North and now they are inside the mall to assess the situation,” Celorio said.

Celorio said that they could still not determine the number of the robbers who stormed the department store.

The report said that police were still investigating which route the suspects took to leave the mall.

An Ad titled "Whipit" by Pantene Philippines shampoo which points out how women and men are labeled differently when taking on the same roles is getting praised worldwide. It tackles gender bias and stereotyping of women.
